Nmap or Network Map is a program that is used to compile a map of a network and monitor, audit, assess and hack various aspects of the network. It uses a command line interface to probe into networks and detect such things as open ports (security breach points), details of hardware, applications connected to the network, their operating systems, existing firewalls etc. It can be uased to assess own network vulnerabilities and therefore be aware of potential security issues or just compile network inventory for maintenance and asset management. Although Nmap is meant for advanced users and proven hackers there is a large support community and online resources for all users willing to share and learn.
