Consider this quick summary of computing evolution: First it appeared on industrial scale, then widely available at home, Most people nowadays use computers, whereby a large proportion of users are totally dependent on it. With the emergence of portable devices there is a demand for storing and carrying large amounts of data. For instance a programmer at the end of workday may carry data on a flash drive to continue coding at home. Two problems with such carriers is that 1) you may constantly misplace it at work or at a friend's house and 2) lose it altogether. It may become increasingly dangerous to lose such devices especially if you carry sensitive personal information. Dropbox comes to solve this problem in that now you can keep all your data on a remote server and access it any time using internet from any device (PC, laptop, smartphone).
