LibreOffice is an alternative open source project for viewing and editing office documents and presentations. It is made up of six modules each with specific functions. The Writer is a word processor and the equivalent of MS Word, the Calc is a spreadsheet editor similar to Excel, Impress is a presentation tool, Draw is for drawing and sketching, Math is for creating and manipulating mathematical formulae, and lastly Base is for database creation. The files are saved in OpenDocument format which is supported by all office suites. The program supports many filters for accommodating MS Office documents for viewing and editing. LibreOffice is the fruit of collective open source efforts to create a free medium of document exchange and standardization of office related files for faster and harmonius operation accross all platforms and propriatory programs.
