The GIMP, which is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program, is a lightweight image editing and painting application similar to Photoshop. It has a much simpler interface but has multiple professional tools for image retouching and creating effects. It hosts a variety of brushes and contains some 150 effects and filters for easy and rich image editing. You can create animations and GIFFs, manipulate pictures in a variety of ways and export to a multiple formats. Advanced users can use plugins and extensions and run scripts. Overall it is a good alternative to the much heavier and expensive Photoshop.
