Rainmeter is a great desktop application to create customizable skins with rich functionality and decorative effetcs. You can create transparent, permanently sticking or temporary skins that fade during mouse overs. Such skins may include battery info, CPu usage, network traffic, disk space, calendars, mail, RSS feeds among many other. You can also launch programs such as notes and to do lists for editing. Last but not least you can stream music using Winamp or iTunes plugins.
